The Kaimanawa Descent is a 23km downhill mountain biking adventure designed for intermediate to advanced riders (Grade 3).
Your journey begins with a helicopter flight from the Kaimanawa Alpine Adventures base to the trailhead on the Patutu Tops (1673m). From there, the first 15km takes you through sweeping Kaimanawa alpine tussock country, with breathtaking views across the Central Plateau and the volcanic peaks of Tongariro National Park. The final 8km winds down through pristine native mountain beech forest, finishing right back at our base on Waipakihi Road.
Ride Profile: 800m (2,500ft) descent with 430m of climbing
Duration: Approximately 3–4 hours, with time to pause and enjoy the views
Bikes: E-bikes and standard mountain bikes available for hire
While the ride offers plenty of downhill thrills, it is not entirely downhill. We recommend an e-bike for riders who are less bike-fit, ensuring you can comfortably enjoy the full experience.
Our helicopters are specially equipped to transport both e-bikes and regular bikes. Please note:
Maximum tyre width is 2.8 inches (7.1cm) – ‘Fat Boy’ tyres cannot be carried.
Bikes are secured in runners with padding between each bike to prevent damage during flight.
See below for a cross-section map, bird’s eye view, and photos of our bike racks in action.
Pricing is valid until 30 June each year.
A Minimum of 4 riders is required for the session to go ahead. We will contact you 3 – 4 days prior to inform you minimums have not been meet.
The 2025/2026 season, Kaimanawa Alpine Adventures will be operating 7 days a week, with regular ride departures at 11:00am and 12:00pm daily. Additional departure times will also be available on demand.
